It’s Baseball Season!

Staff Photo by Doug Strickland/Chattanooga Times Free Press - April 20, 2012. Chattanooga Lookouts designated hitter Brian Cavazos-Galvez warms up in center field before the Lookouts' final game of their series against the Birmingham Barons in Chattanooga, Tenn. on Thursday. The Lookouts won 9-2.
I’ve got a 300mm lens on a tripod slung over one shoulder and a 400 in a case at my feet, and that can only mean one thing: it’s baseball season. Okay, baseball season actually started a few weeks ago, but I don’t get to pick my assignments at the Times Free Press so it’s not like I get to shoot baseball every day. Continue reading

GPS's win against Ensworth marks their second state championship title in a row.
This probably won’t happen very often with shoots during my internship with the Times Free Press, but this assignment was so much fun that I had to share it in its own post. I got to shoot the state TSSAA division II-AA girls basketball final in Nashville on Saturday where Chattanooga’s own Girls Preparatory School was competing for the state title for the second year in a row. Local Gym Puts an Urban Twist on Rock Climbing

Adam Cofer falls from the boulder at Urban Rocks Gym in Chattanooga. Bouldering, which has grown immensely popular in the southeast, is the sport of climbing a smaller rock wall or boulder with no harness and a safety pad below the climber.
Rock climbing has historically been an outdoor sport, but the local Urban Rocks climbing gym has turned that notion on its head. The gym is a full-service climbing facility housed in a large warehouse off of Amnicola highway. New and experienced climbers alike can come for a day-pass of bouldering, which involves climbing a large boulder-like structure with no safety harness but large cushioned “crash pads” below, top-roping, in which the climber is secured via a harness and “belayer” who is responsible for securing the climber with a rope, and lead climbing for more experienced climbers. The routes vary in difficulty and are listed with colored tape for easy navigation. If you don’t have a climbing partner but still want to climb the big walls, the gym has three “auto-belay” devices which you can clip your harness to and will safely lower you to the ground in the event of a fall.
